Visit the University of Roehampton’s best-kept secret

The University of Roehampton’s Grove House Estate

The University of Roehampton’s Grove House Estate is open to the Wandsworth community as it supports Open Garden Squares Weekend

The University of Roehampton’s Grove House Estate will be open to the public for self-guided tours on Sunday 19th June between 11am and 4pm as part of London Parks & Gardens Trust’s Open Gardens Squares Weekend.

The beautiful gardens are one of the University’s best-kept secrets and relatively unknown locally. Open to the public, the Wandsworth community are invited to visit Grove House to appreciate the grounds and get an insight into the history of the gardens which date back to 1622. The University’s history and heritage expert will be on-hand throughout the day to answer questions on its rich history.

“Grove House Estate features unknown treasures like its Rooks Grotto which was constructed around 1912, an ice house,a mausoleum and lake, which make for a beautiful tour,” comments Gilly King, History and Heritage Adviser at the University of Roehampton. “The University of Roehampton is renowned for its stunning campus environment which creates a special community for students to enjoy and be a part of throughout the academic year.

“The Open Gardens Squares Weekend is a brilliant way for us to showcase the gardens and share them with the wider community.”

Grove House Estate has been home to Froebel College since 1921 where, still to this day, it offers higher education in teacher training. This year is particularly notable to the University as it marks the 175th anniversary of the foundation of its Whitelands College, and celebrations ensure throughout the year. Now in its 18th year, the Open Gardens Squares project has over 200 gardens taking place across the weekend of 18th and 19th June, other local gardens include Roehampton Club. Those visiting Grove House gardens are welcome to have picnics, bring their dogs as long as they are kept on a lead, and free parking is available on site.
